PGR 4 Review
game: Project Gotham Racing 4
review | 10/24/07 | Chris Martin
Fans of racing games take note: Project Gotham Racing 4 is a dream come true--lots of exotic cars, tons of tracks, weather effects, Bulldog Mode, and a rock-solid career mode to boot. Oh yeah, and motorcycles. PGR4 might be working a gamer niche that is already supersaturated by the likes of Forza, PGR3, and Burnout. But it still manages, despite it\'s competition, to be a furiously enjoyable racer with more variety than it perhaps knows what to do with.

I Want To Give Peter Molyneux a Big Hug
game: Fable 2
news | 08/08/07 | Chris Martin
Some incorporate, others innovate. Peter Molyneux is the kind of developer that makes you want to give him a big hug. He\'s the kind of developer that is not satisfied with the way games are and insists that he innovate. He is the kind of man who gets an idea and runs with it. Recently, Peter Molyneux, in an interview and combat demonstration with Kikizo, had a lot to say about the state of combat in video games, and a lot to say about how Fable 2 would change it all, forever.

Why Consumers Don't Want a New Xbox 360; Why I Need Another Xbox 360
game: Xbox 360 Elite
editorial | 04/04/07 | Chris Martin
Microsoft seems to be trying to play catch-up with the wrong gaming company. Instead of chasing the Nintendo Wii as it storms through the gaming industry, Microsoft is introducing features that bring it closer in line with the PS3. The PS3 has Blu-ray; Xbox 360 gets a HD DVD drive. PS3 has HDMI, and now so does the Xbox 360 Elite. Both systems now have price tags approaching half a grand. Standing in the middle between Nintendo and Sony\'s price tags, Microsoft would be better served introducing a cheaper SKU to compete as a high-end competitor to the Wii, not a low end competitor to the PS3. Yet both Sony and Microsoft seem to be pursuing features that are driven less by consumer demand and more by their own competition for the beefiest console. There\'s a reason that we don\'t need the Xbox 360 Elite; it\'s called the PS3, and not many people are buying that as it is. Why use that as the model for your feature list?

Super Swing Golf Review
game: Super Swing Golf
review | 01/31/07 | George Holomshek
The golf featured in Wii Sports introduced a lot of casual gamers to a virtual sport many of them would never have touched on their own. Yet Wii Sports Golf is hardly a complete game, and has only one full course. Tecmo has stepped forward to offer Super Swing Golf, a more complete golf title that combines an odd mix of more challenging golf elements and overly-stylized presentation. Without online play, Super Swing may be missing a key element, but with a dozen courses and more golf features it serves as competent follow-up to what Nintendo started back when the Wii launched.

Eragon Review
game: Eragon
review | 01/15/07 | Jason Perkins
The story behind the first Eragon book, movie, and video game is an interesting one, starting with a home-schooled student that published his book at 19 years old. Now, with a movie that is being universally trashed by reviewers, the Eragon video game has come forward to redeem the franchise from embarrassment. Sadly, its repetitive gameplay and incoherent storytelling don\'t do Eragon much justice, portraying the world as nothing but an endless stream of bad guys with frustrating gameplay. The movie and book have been accused of being derivative of classics like Star Wars; the video game doesn\'t present a coherent enough story to be accused of being derivative of anything.

Just Cause Review
game: Just Cause
review | 10/25/06 | Sean Hilliard
You are a rugged, sexy operative ordered to take down a whole country, and no matter how many times you have to jump out of that airplane, hijack that automobile, or jump through the blades of a moving helicopter you\'re going to kill that guy, or save that guy, or find that item! In Just Cause, regime change is the goal, and it\'s up to you, your trusty parachute, and a grappling hook to revolutionize a whole South American state. But before you go getting all hopped up on your School of the Americas delusions of grandeur, be sure to check Sean\'s review. Test Drive Unlimited Review
game: Test Drive Unlimited
review | 09/30/06 | Chris Martin
Atari\'s Test Drive Unlimited brings some of the best and most mediocre that driving games have to offer. With loads of licensed vehicles and an innovative and fun online multiplayer, TDU is an interesting play for anyone into the driving genre. But some graphical glitches, physics-based wonkiness and repetitive game modes prevent it from being our most favorite. Get the well-rounded evaluation of Atari\'s latest driving simulator from Chris Martin, our resident race game expert.

Report Claims PS3 Games Will Sell for Between $76 and $84
news | 09/25/06 | Aaron Stanton
The PS3\'s spendy price tag already has many gamers up in arms and puts the system completely outside the range of most casual spenders. With the PS3 clocking in at hundreds of dollars above the entry price of their competition, what could they possibly do to make their system even more inaccessible? How about games selling for between $76 and $84 each? A Japanese report suggests that they\'ll be doing just that. Reliable? Who knows, but Sony\'s recent history suggests that they\'re prepared to believe that gamers will accept any price they decide to offer, so who knows?

Sam and Max Possibly Heading for the Wii
game: Sam and Max
news | 09/18/06 | Aaron Stanton
The advent of services like Xbox Live and the Wii Virtual Console have changed the dynamics of the industry. Suddenly there\'s a marketplace for less mainstream genres that have a hard time competing against the likes of Halo and Zelda. One such genre: Adventure Games. According to 1up.com, Nintendo has heard fans asking for adventure game content and contacted TellTale games about the possibility of bringing Sam and Max to the Wii. A sure thing? Far from it, but it\'s nice to know that you can make a difference if you shout loud enough. Good job, guys and gals.

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology Review: All the Street Fighting You Could Ever Want
game: Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
review | 08/14/06 | Amanda Bateman
Old school fighting game fans, get your thumbs ready. The Street Fighter Alpha series has been bundled into one convenient package and adapted for the PS2. But is that enough for the classic 2D side-scrolling fighter to grab and hold your interest? The anthology offers a great classic arcade feel, but the gameplay of Street Fighter has been copied enough times over the years that the fighting is, sadly, nothing special anymore. If you\'re a fan of the past, this is a great collection, as collections go, but it stands as a reminder of how far fighting games have come over the years.

The Official GamesFirst! Guide to Achievement Points
game: Xbox 360
editorial | 06/06/06 | Matt James
Xbox Live\'s ability to record achievements adds an entirely new dimension to online gaming. Suddenly, everything you do matters, and achieving a high gamer score is like managing to break into the top ten at the local video arcade (if you lived in the \'80s). In this article, we sit down with an Xbox 360 controller and a stack of games to find out the best ways to raise your gamer score with as little work as possible. Geometry Wars might be fun, but it\'s nearly a waste of time if you\'re interested in raising your stats. Madden 2006, though? It\'s a goldmine for even the unskilled footballer. And it\'s not the only one.

Sony and the PS3: Are They Really Going Beyond?
editorial | 05/26/06 | RJ Brooks
The overwhelming market domination of the PS2 has been Sony\'s biggest strength, as well as their chossen ideology in the PS3\'s console design, specs, and marketing. Ironically, the PS3 is also proving that size is not everything when it goes up against innovation (Nintendo and Microsoft). What has been presented by Sony as \"the next generation\" begs the question: While the PS3\'s tag-line reads \"Go Beyond\" is Sony really taking their own advice? With a system price that exceeds both their competition combined, is Sony prepared to push themselves beyond a game of matching, and truly lead the industry?

Live Anywhere Developer: Xbox 360 Controller Beats the Keyboard and Mouse
game: Shadowrun
feature | 05/18/06 | Aaron Stanton
When you put a keyboard and mouse against a console controller, most people would say that the keyboard and mouse would win. However, most people would be wrong. With the introduction of Live Anywhere, a service that will put Xbox 360 players against PC users in the same games, the game industry has found a new perspective on the old debate. After a few minutes with one of the Shadowrun developers, it became clear that their main problem was not making the 360 controller competitive with the PC, but keeping the PC from getting owned by the Xbox 360. Even against experienced Halo and Counterstrike players, fairly average Xbox players seemed to have an advantage on the battlefield. Sometimes, reality is surprising.

Fans of being evil, rejoice! The sequel to the morality breaking game (or making, but that\'s no fun) Fable and Fable: The Lost Chapters for the Xbox has been announced for the Xbox 360. We couldn\'t be happier. Finally, Peter Molyneux\'s team of jokesters and homage heralds are hard at work on the sequel to one of the most promising (and overhyped) games ever to grace a console. And we got the first look! Here\'s what we know about Fable 2!
