game: The Simpsons Game

The Simpsons are a perennial videogame topic. Many of the games created in the franchise are utterly forgettable. (Anyone up for a round of Simpsons Wrestling? Didn\'t think so...) But there have been a few well-done Simpsons games: Simpsons Hit and Run (a GTA clone) and The Simpsons Road Rage (a Crazy Taxi clone) were both enjoyable. The Simpsons Game isn\'t a direct rip-off of any particular game. It sticks to a platform/action approach and uses the whole world of videogames for its satirical fodder. The result is a Simpsons game that may be slightly less polished in terms of gameplay but is easily the game that feels most like a real Simpsons episode. Check out our review for more.

Once the reveared developers of Shenmue, Virtua Fighter, Afterburner, Space Harrier (the list goes on) are hard at work bringing their \"light gun shooter\" Ghost Squad to the Nintendo Wii. Which means it\'s a \"Wii gun shooter\" or a \"light Wii shooter\" or a \"Wiimote shooter.\" Whatever you call it, it\'s very much in Wii vein with 4-player co-op. Sure, the game has been out in arcades since 2004, but better late than never, I always say.

The Fatal Inertia Demo arrived on Xbox Live the other day and now we have an idea of what Koei has been up to. While not a direct descendent of WipEout, it takes some key ingredients - namely the hovering cars and the weapons, which can be acquired by passing over pods of colored light on the racetrack. Racetrack, however, is used lightly, as you speed through canyons, not between buildings in this high-velocity sci-fi racer.

Hot on the heels of Settlers of Catan, which invaded XBLA last month, Carcassonne, the board game based on the fortified city in France of the same name, comes to Xbox Live Arcade in a very worthy package. While slightly pricy at 800 microsoft points, Carcassonne is an excellent strategy game for up to 4 people locally, or 5 over Xbox Live, although you\'ll find it best with only two or three.

The PS3 has not had an easy launch. While the mainstream media has been treating the system very MTV-like (with unquestioning adoration), Sony\'s street credit amongst the hardcore has been taking almost daily blows. From problems with HDTV support to shortages at launch, Sony just hasn\'t been getting the positive consumer response they probably wanted. Now, Joystiq.com is reporting on a YouTube video that highlights just how bad PS2 games look when run on the PS3\'s backwards compatibility. The side-by-side comparison video between a PS2 game running on the PS3 vs. an actual PS2 is really fairly stunning. The PS2 beats the PS3 hands down, and does so clearly enough that you don\'t have to be picky to notice the difference. Check out the article for more information.

The Wii has burst onto the scene this Fall every bit as popular as some imagined. Its success is due, in part, to a single title that many Nintendo fans have been eager to play: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has been re-tooled from its Gamecube origins for the Wii\'s unique controller and brawnier hardware. Bad Day LA had everything going for it, from celeb designer to outrageous hype-generating premise. Even the publisher, Aspyr Media, has some serious cred, having released last year\'s cult hit Stubbs the Zombie. So what could have gone wrong? Zap Dramatic makes a unique series of games built around negotiating. In games such as \"The Raise\" and \"The Mediator,\" players must navigate through a complex social web, made more realistic by a touch of unpredictability and predictable limitations. Dialogue-oriented games are occasionally popular (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney, for example), but often suffer from the good/bad, light side/dark side, oversimplification of games like Fable or Knights of the Old Republic. Capcom has brought its beloved sidescroller Ghosts \'n Goblins to the next-gen of handhelds with Ultimate Ghosts \'n Goblins for PSP. The new visuals are pretty, and fans of the slightly wonky and completely manic classic GnG experience will be happy. The Xbox Live Vision Camera is a great thing in most ways, but we wish there were more to do with it at the moment. Having just launched, not a lot of folks have dropped the 40 beans necessary to add a (slightly creepy) glowing eye to your Xbox 360s already too powerful and communicative brain. But the potential is undeniable: A solid camera and incredibly easy installation and configuration bode well for this device, which may also hold Microsoft\'s key to providing Wii-like game interaction without a controller. As if you didn\'t have enough reason to love this game. Here are 17 brand new hi-res screens of the Xbox 360 version of F.E.A.R. You\'ll see some nice particle effects, lighting effects, and others. Early builds showed that the game didn\'t have wall parts chunking out after being shot, but these screens show otherwise. Check \'em out!

With videogames in the spotlight, and movies and television taking a backseat to criticism for a while at least, Professor Nicholas Carnagey of Iowa State University has conducted a study to see if videogame violence desensitises gamers to other forms of violence. Skeptics might be thinking \"of course\"; any kind of violence over prolonged durations will cause the viewer to be desensitised in the end. Well, studies are showing that it\'s much quicker than expected. You might be shocked from the results.
