Hall of Fame

February 2, 2001

LOS ANGELES, January 31, 2001 John Carmack, founder, owner and technical director of id Software, will be inducted into the Academy’s Hall of Fame during the 4th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards on March 22, 2001.

John Carmack and the development team at id Software can be credited with introducing a whole new perspective, literally, to interactive entertainment. With the 1992 release of Wolfenstein 3-D, game players were placed into the headspace of the characters they controlled and the first-person shooter genre was born. DOOM followed a year later, and confirmed id Software as the industry leader in 3-D action gaming. An estimated 15 million copies of DOOM have been downloaded, passed from player to player by floppy disk or via online networks around the world.

Carmack’s work on the engine which drove Quake, the revolutionary game which first realized a true 3-D environment in which game players could operate, further opened the first-person shooter genre to new creative possibilities. These possibilities have since been developed and explored in Quake II and Quake III Arena, games which continue to heighten consumer expectations for quality in 3D graphics and online gameplay.

Carmack is currently working on the technology that will continue to expand the boundaries in which game experiences take place. To the delight of gaming fans, id Software has plans to revisit the worlds introduced in Wolfenstein 3-D and DOOM with this new technology.

Carmack will join 1998 Award recipient Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, 1999 recipient Sid Meier of Firaxis Games, and 2000 recipient Hironobu Sakaguchi of Square USA. In keeping with Academy tradition, Mr. Sakaguchi will return to present the Hall of Fame Award to Mr. Carmack.

The Academy Hall of Fame honors those who have made the most enduring, groundbreaking, and seminal contributions to the world of interactive entertainment. Qualifications for selection include: pioneering a new genre or otherwise changing the face of the art form, influencing other designers and products, demonstrating the highest level of creativity and innovation, and achieving consistent product success on a scale that expands the scope of industry.
