PSX Titles Compatible With PlayStation 2?

Subject: i have a question about PS2

Hi, this is Matt and I was wondering, how many regular PlayStation

games are compatible with the PlayStation 2? Thanks.

Matt,

Well, the PS2 is supposed to play virtually all of the PSX games. When it

was released in Japan, there were about five titles that were known to not

work on the PS2 (out of the 6000 or so titles released over there since the

PSX came out). Since the PS2 has been out, more PSX titles that do not play

have come to light. I believe the number is around 15 or so. Still, that’s

not bad at all. A lot of folks are saying that some of these will not work

on the American version, either, although it’s hard to say for sure at this

point in time. Most of the speculation is based on games that came out in

Japan and were brought to the US, so people are assuming that the same

problems will transfer, which is probably not a bad assumption, but not

necessarily true. Odds are we’ll have a similar experience here, where we

know so many games won’t work and discover more titles as we try to play

them. Only a third as many games have been released in the US for the PSX,

so it might seem like a higher percentage.

I hope that answers your question. Thanks a lot for writing and reading GF!

Take it easy, and keep checking the site for more PS2 coverage.

hello my name is michael steele i would like to know when the playstation 2

is coming out in england

Michael,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. It’s been busy times around the

GF! Sony just released the European dates this past week. It looks like you

can expect to be a whole lot busier playing games around November 24, 2000.

Sony also confirmed that the PS2 will cost 299 in the UK, 2990 FF in France

and 869 DM in Germany. Sounds like a deal to me. Have fun when the new system comes out, and if you keep reading GF!, you’ll be up-to-date on which games to

pick up that first day.

Take care,

Shawn

Can I Still Pre-Order PS2?

I would appreciate you letting me know if I can still pre-order?

Dre,

It all depends on where you live. In Moscow, Idaho, reservations are

non-existant. One of our reviewers drove 300 miles to find a KB Toys where

he could still reserve a PS2. They’re getting scant already, and they’re not

even out! If I were you, I’d start calling all the KB Toys, Babbages,

Electronics Boutiques, and any other electronics/toy store in my area and

ask if they still have reservations available. Good luck. Let us know how

the search goes.

Thanks for writing and reading GF!

Take care,

Galaga for PC?

Subject: GALAGA

When will The New Galaga be available for PC, Nintendo 64, or Sega Dreamcast?

Please let us know. It is our favorite game. When a new game comes out, it should be

released for ALL systems at the same time. This is unfair.

Hello Tabers,

Galaga will be out simultaneously for PC and PSX. The release date right now is 09/24/00. So pretty soon. I agree, it would be cool to see all games coming out for all systems. I think we will see a lot more of that as the console systems further diversify and become as powerful as PC gaming systems. While there were a lot of practical reasons to release a game, say, only on PC, these days most of those reasons have gone out the window. With the release of PS2, X-Box, the Dolphin and Indrema, game publishers are going to have to offer most of their titles on all systems. Of course, there will likely still be the occasional platform-specific title that we all wish we could play. For more thoughts on this issue and others like it, you might check out “There Can Be Only One?,” an editorial I wrote this summer, located here:

I hope that answer helps. Thanks for reading and writing to GF! Let us know how you like that Galaga.

Take it easy,

Shawn
