Why I'm Selling Back Gears of War When Halo 3 Comes Out
game: Gears of War
editorial | 09/20/07 | Chris Martin
Gears of War is considered one of the best shooters on the Xbox 360, scratch that, one of the best shooters period. But But Epic\'s gruesome stop-and-popper is still second best on Xbox Live losing to a last generation Halo 2. It\'s a great game, sure, but it has problems. Serious problems. Find out why Chris would be so quick to toss GoW to the wind, perhaps you sympathize.

news | 08/07/07 | Chris Martin
In Xbox Live News, Major Nelson posted news of a new Live update which adds support for wireless guitars for Guitar Hero and Rock Band (and whatever other guitar/music games that end up using them). This comes at the heel of impressions of gear.ign.com/articles/792/792876p1.html\"" onClick="window.open( this.href, '_self' ); return false;" title="">Guitar Hero 3\'s Wireless guitar.

Forza 2 Gets 4 New Cars in First Downloadable Pack
game: Forza Motorsport 2
news | 08/01/07 | Chris Martin
It didn\'t take long for Turn 10\'s gearheaded staff to release the first of, what I assume will be, many downloadable packs for Forza Motorsport 2. In this pack they bring us four cars. The first three come from Nissan and are free for all: 2007 Sentra SE-R, 2007 Altima, 2007 350Z. The fourth car is the second place winner of this year\'s Le Mans: the Peugeot 908 race car - costing 50 gamerpoints (not bad). The Peugeot is also the first racecar (R4-1 class), as gamers will note, that can be painted.

Viva Pinata Review
game: Viva Pinata
review | 01/25/07 | Chris Martin
With Viva Pinata, Rare has produced their first truly standout game since going to bat for Microsoft. The pinata-rearing simulation may look like a child\'s game, but it turns out to be one of the most addictive and deep games to ever grace the Xbox 360. Reminiscent of simulation and collection titles like The Sims and Animal Crossing, Viva Pinata is open and never ending, addictive and compelling, and one of the best games of the year. Because of its unusual style it\'ll never have a fan base the size of games like Gears of War, and most Xboxers will probably never buy a copy even though they almost certainly should. Read the full review for details on what makes this game so great.

Gears of War Review
game: Gears of War
review | 12/19/06 | Chris Martin
The Xbox 360 needed a killer app to help counteract the release of both the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii, a game that would make their year-old system more appealing to potential Christmas shoppers. Well, Epic delivered with Gears of War, one of the best games to ever grace a game system. Even after the shiny new gleam has worn off, Gears of War continues to amaze, and promises to be a lasting online and offline hit for some time to come. Between Gears of War and Halo, Microsoft is holding some intellectual properties that will sell consoles, and you better bet that they know it.

Gears of War: What is it Good For?
game: Gears of War
editorial | 12/07/06 | Chris Martin
Microsoft\'s Gears of War gets lots of things right. It offers an intense single/co-op campaign, a \"sweet-spot\" versus multiplayer of 4v4, and some of the best presentation ever in a videogame. But it also fumbles here and there in ways we would have liked to see ironed out. In this editorial, we analyze what we would love to see kept or improved on in the sequel.

EA Exec: Foot In Mouth?
game: Gears of War
editorial | 11/12/06 | Chris Martin
Foot in the mouth? That\'s what we\'re thinking. When Alain Tascan, General Manager for EA Montreal, stated that Gears of War has \"zero innovation,\" we guess that soon after he was either munching on a big bowl of \"his own words\" or the rubber of a Doc Marten. Either way: here\'s our take.

Gears of War Emerges Alongside PS3, Sony Makes Angry Face

news | 08/03/06 | Chris Martin
REDMOND, Washington - Aug. 3, 2006 - Microsoft offices today announced that Epic Games\', \"Gears of War\" has been given a solid release date. Gamers have been waiting for the game since its impressive showing at E3 2005, and we posted our hands-on multiplayer preview a while back. But now, \"Emergence Day\" is not so mysterious and, guess what, it\'s releasing in November, right alongside the PlayStation 3.

SteelSeries 5L Review: It Will Cost You in Gold
game: SteelPad 5L
review | 07/16/06 | Tristan Mayshark
SteelSeries has a line of high-end peripherals that includes the \"5L Steel\" mousepad, an extra large 15x11 inch mousepad designed to give you the edge in PC gaming. Despite being durable and perfectly suited for what it\'s designed to do, the SteelPad suffers from the same symptom that afflicts most high-end specialized gaming gear: It\'s a top notch mousepad, but costs twice what it should.

Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel Review
game: Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel
review | 07/10/06 | Laurie Taylor
The graphic novel has earned itself a standing as an independent art form over the years, and is now moving into the digital realm. Following in the footsteps of the Silent Hill Experience, Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel comes to the PSP under the banner of a new medium. Except, instead of just telling a good story in classic graphic novel form, the developers felt obligated to include uninteresting and tedious gameplay elements into the presentation. The result is promising, but less than perfect. Graphic novel fans should be excited about the potential, but for now the rich promise of digital graphic novels on the PSP remains unrealized.

Ping Pong Renaissance: Table Tennis Review
game: Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis
review | 06/07/06 | Shawn Rider
Rockstar\'s latest title isn\'t a murder simulator or hardcore gangsta shooter. It\'s a pleasant game of Table Tennis, and it\'s really well-done. Rockstar Presents Table Tennis comes from their San Diego studio, well known for creating the Smuggler\'s Run and Midnight Club series. If Table Tennis sounds like a major change of speed, that\'s because it is. But when the results are so much fun, we\'re fine with switching gears. Get the full review here from Shawn.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Preview
game: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
preview | 05/30/06 | RJ Brooks
Castlevania debuted on the Nintendo DS in near perfect form in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. The Konami release is still one of the best games available on Nintendo\'s latest handheld system. Now, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is gearing for another round of Dracula hunting, including a form of Co-op play and a new dual character system that encourages you to switch between characters as you play. While there are still a lot of unanswered questions about how the game will be balanced, the Castlevania sequel is certainly looking strong enough to capture our attention. Read our preview for more details.

Sony and the PS3: Are They Really Going Beyond?
editorial | 05/26/06 | RJ Brooks
The overwhelming market domination of the PS2 has been Sony\'s biggest strength, as well as their chossen ideology in the PS3\'s console design, specs, and marketing. Ironically, the PS3 is also proving that size is not everything when it goes up against innovation (Nintendo and Microsoft). What has been presented by Sony as \"the next generation\" begs the question: While the PS3\'s tag-line reads \"Go Beyond\" is Sony really taking their own advice? With a system price that exceeds both their competition combined, is Sony prepared to push themselves beyond a game of matching, and truly lead the industry?

E3 Exclusive: Hands on with Best of Show 06: Gears of War
game: Gears of War
preview | 05/15/06 | Chris Martin
Microsoft\'s 500 lbs gorilla this Fall is Gears of War. Not only did Gears manage to rip the GamesFirst! Best of Show trophy right out of our +5 Controller Grip, but it managed to prove to some jaded fellows that it is more than just another shooter. Featuring a focus on team-based strategic play, elements of quick-reflex skills, and some of the best audio and visuals we\'ve ever seen, Gears of War is the one game every Xbox 360 owner will buy this Fall.

Re-shuffle This Deck: Metal Gear Ac!d 2 Review
game: Metal Gear Ac!d 2
review | 04/19/06 | Jeremy Kauffman
Metal Gear Ac!d 2 is another iteration of the card and tile, turn-based take on the fan-favorite stealth action series. The first iteration of Ac!d was not exactly a hit (then again, it\'s still one of the few titles created exclusively for the system). How does Ac!d 2 improve its game? It improves it with completely \"non-gimmicky\" additions like PS2 connectivity and an \"amazing\" 3D viewer that is guaranteed to cramp you up and give you a headache. Ac!d is a unique experience to say the least, and you can get all the rest of the details in Jeremy\'s review here.
