Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam Review
game: Tony hawk's Downhill Jam
review | 12/23/06 | Matt James
Tony Hawk\'s Downhill Jam is sort of like a THPS lite, but that doesn\'t make it a game you should avoid. Building on the old-school THPS timed gameplay style, Downhill Jam offers up some quality gameplay on the Nintendo DS. If you\'re looking for something a little less intense than THUG or Project 8 for your daily commute or li\'l skater-in-training, the you could do worse than grabbing Downhill Jam. Check out Matt\'s review for the details.

That Retro Review: The Secret of Monkey Island
game: The Secret of Monkey Island
feature | 09/08/06 | Chris Martin
Ah, remember when games were games and gamers were gamers who loved graphical adventures! Trust us, it happened sometime in the early nineties. Graphical adventures have been gaining steam lately, what with the soon-to-be-gold \"Sam & Max: Episode One\" in October. And since we love retro games so much, we put two and two together and came out with GROG! In this new weekly column, we force Chris to play through one old-school game and write about it. He\'s currently recovering now that he\'s seen the ghost pirate LeChuck in \"The Secret of Monkey Island.\"

Pre-E3: Sadness Preview
game: Sadness
preview | 05/07/06 | George Holomshek
Indy Polish developer, Nibris, has given us some very nice screens of their upcoming Wii project, Sadness. Sadness is an unusual game for a few reasons: It\'s entirely in black-and-white, which gives it the feel of a creepy old-school horror movie. The psychological tensions built into the game should help to accentuate that \"Psycho\" quality, and to further intensify the gameplay, Nibris has also disregarded traditional weapons in favor of ad hoc armaments. Players will have to defend themselves with sticks, stones, torches, and shards of glass. George has a complete rundown on why Sadness is on his radar at E3 2006.

UberSoldier! Review
game: UberSoldier
review | 05/01/06 | Tristan Mayshark
If the slow pacing of FPS titles like Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 put you off, UberSoldier might be able to offer a more mindless and action oriented experience at a budget price. Some players will think it\'s a wonderful excursion from the tedious, and some players will quite reasonably hate it. For the former group, this zombie-filled WWII shooter is worth the $29 that you\'ll put down at your local video game store. It embodies old-school first person shooting, executing the genre tried-and-true without all that complicated crap like an interesting plot.

Meridian4 Announces Shadowgrounds
game: Shadowgrounds
news | 01/19/06 | Shawn Rider
Meridian4 has been having a good new year. They\'ve been picking up games left and right, and the titles just keep looking better and better. These are the kinds of games that I\'d love to see downloadable via Xbox Live, and that you can download and have a great time with on your laptop. That\'s not to say that they\'re low-fi, but they\'re not exactly cutting edge, either. Which can be fun. Their latest announcement is about Shadowgrounds, a sci-fi action title that offers a fresh take on old-school 3rd person shooters. It looks like Ikari Warriors meets Aliens.

Alien Hominid
game: Alien Hominid
review | 01/02/05 | Laurie Taylor
It's always good to see a game developed independent of the mainstream industry, as is the case of Alien Hominid, a side scrolling mountain of action that scores points with anyone that has a taste for old-school, Contra-style gameplay. Read why this stylistic GameCube and PS2 title is well worth your time.

Midway Arcade Treasures 2
game: Midway Arcade Treasures 2
review | 11/30/04 | Chris Martin
Some people have greater claim to history than others. Britney Spears, who's been a pop icon for somewhere around five years, has a harder time legitimately releasing a Greatest Hits album than say, The Rolling Stones, or The Beatles. But in the videogame industry, few companies can claim history like Midway, and they've put together another collection of classics to let us gamers relive the old-school. How have these forerunners held up over the years? Make sure you read our review to find out if this collection should make it into a loved one's gift pile? or onto your wish list.

Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO Review (Xbox)
game: Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO
review | 04/02/03 | GF! Back Catalogue 10/2004 => 1995
Xbox fans arguably get the best version of Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO. Thing you can hang with the elite Japanese fighters? We doubt it. Click here for more.

Capcom brings us another phenomenal RPG for the GBA, and thank goodness. Breath of Fire II is a worthy successor to the franchise. While next-gen RPGs are few and far between, this old-school SNES port packs some classic gameplay in a tidy, pretty, and portable package. Click here.
