Inaccurate stories are often hard to kill after they\'ve seen some publicity. When Sony sent out a press release on January 8th claiming that the Sixaxis controller had won an Emmy for technical innovation, many people were understandably upset. Why had the Sixaxis won and not the Nintendo Wii? Then, 1UP.com reported that the Wiimote had also won an Emmy. In truth, neither won. Both Sony and Nintendo did win awards, but both won for past contributions, not for the Wii or the PS3. Nintendo won for the D-Pad. Sony won for the Dual Shock.

Blending RPG and RTS elements, SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars puts you in command of an army tasked with defending the known world from utter evil. OK, so the innovation doesn\'t exactly carry through to the narrative plot. Regardless, if you love RPGs and you love real-time strategy, then you will likely love SpellForce 2\'s hybrid. The overwhelming market domination of the PS2 has been Sony\'s biggest strength, as well as their chossen ideology in the PS3\'s console design, specs, and marketing. Ironically, the PS3 is also proving that size is not everything when it goes up against innovation (Nintendo and Microsoft). What has been presented by Sony as \"the next generation\" begs the question: While the PS3\'s tag-line reads \"Go Beyond\" is Sony really taking their own advice? Rather than pushing system specs as the selling point like Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo has concentrated on the innovation of Wii\'s system capabilities. But it\'s more than a crazy idea: It\'s the Entertaible, and it\'s being shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show 2006. Sony\'s Eye Toy is one of the coolest innovations we\'ve seen in gaming controllers. Of course, the original EyeToy Play disc was a bit shallow and remains more of a tech demo. However, EyeToy Play 2 is a really wonderful improvement, offering much deeper gameplay and more enjoyable multiplayer.

The modern world of videogames is like most other creative pursuits in that it is now coming of age and realizing its full potential. During the course of this realization, many different phases and styles have, and will, emerge. Turning points and plateaus are inevitable, as are special titles that represent "timeless" examples of the artform. Just as a classic Mercedes Gullwing will always stand out from the crowd of other cars, certain games will represent a highpoint in gaming that will maintain a certain "Wow" factor in the decades of gaming to come. Further, just because drastically better 3D modeling, and other innovations, are coming doesn't necessarily mean that the games will make a deeper, or even as deep of an, impression on the audience than its well-crafted ancestor did.
