Brain Boost: Beta Wave and Brain Boost: Gamma Wave Reviews
game: If Only They Could All Be Brain Age
review | 01/09/07 | Laurie Taylor
The success of Brain Age has helped to launch an entire genre into the public mindset. While video games will probably always revolve around high action and high intensity, games designed to make you smarter have established a slower, more serious side of gaming. Yet even games that are designed to make you smarter have to be fun, and Majesco\'s Brain Boost series for the Nintendo DS simply doesn\'t make the cut. We take a look at Brain Boost: Beta Wave and Brain Boost: Gamma Wave to see if there\'s a winning combination of entertaining puzzles and something to improve the mind; we\'re not entirely convinced we found either.

The Current Standard: Spin on Video Game Blogs
editorial | 01/05/07 | Chris Martin
Recently, in an interview with Ars Technica, Scott Henson, product unit manager for Microsoft\'s game technology group, made a statement regarding HD-DVD and Sony\'s defunct Betamax. Unfortunately for those of us who read only headlines and move on, the whole story is not being told. And now it\'s being spun by blogs with a hankering for a little more web traffic into a false statement. In this editorial, Chris Martin discusses the spin that blogs like to put on quotes and tries to understand just why blogs have no responsibility to report truth.

Final Fantasy XI 360 Beta Released
game: Final Fantasy XI
preview | 01/25/06 | Matt James
Final Fantasy has been a holdout series, maintaining its PlayStation 2 exclusivity for the larger part of this previous generation. (Square Enix did give in and release some Final Fantasy games for Gamecube and GBA in the past few years.) The Xbox 360 will break down those walls. Not only is Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi bringing a series of exclusive games to Xbox 360 with his new company, but Final Fantasy XI will arrive on the platform, too. The latest copy of Xbox Magazine features a Final Fantasy XI beta test disc for Xbox 360 owners. If you\'re a fan of FF, then you\'ll want to check this out. Our man, Matt James, has the rundown on the beta test experience.

Seed Beta Test Sign-Ups
game: Seed
news | 01/10/06 | Shawn Rider
Beta signups are now open for the upcoming sci-fi MMORPG, Seed. Seed puts you in the role of a colonist settling the tense, perilous planet Da Vinci. A unique cel-shaded visual approach gives Seed the feeling of a graphic novel, and all of the in-game information is designed to uphold this comic book feel: Speech is shown in dialogue bubbles, and the screen is broken into panels. Gameplay is unique, too, focusing on character development and dynamically generated stories that are created for each individual player according to their style. Check out the Seed beta signups in order to get the early bird special this February.

SketchFighter 4000 Preview
game: SketchFighter 4000
preview | 12/26/05 | Aaron Stanton
Though large publishers like EA and Ubisoft might get most of the mainstream media coverage, the most creative companies sometimes tend to be smaller, less well known. Ambrosia Software, creators of Darwinia, have come up with another instantly recognizable success. Now heading into Beta, SketchFighter 4000 is an action exploration game that\'s defined by its presentation. The entire game looks like it was drawn during third period on a notepad.

Redefine The Grind: Sociolotron and the Atypical Gamer (Part One)
game: Sociolotron
feature | 11/07/05 | Shawn Rider
We published Shawn\'s preview of Sociolotron a year ago. Sociolotron is an adults-only RPG that plunges players into an anything-goes world of post-apocalyptic London. Sex, drugs, and occult rituals play prominent roles in the world, as does free agency, community service, and player-based self-governance. A year ago the game was in beta testing, and since coming out in a final version a few months ago Sociolotron has seen some refinement and enhancements, but remained essentially the same game, heavy on role-playing of all sorts. Rather than a review of Sociolotron, Shawn revisited the game and its players to take a closer look at the phenomenon that is Sociolotron in a two part series. This week we present the first portion, and next Monday we\'ll post the conclusion.

Please note: This article is not for the feint of heart or impressionable youths. Remember, Sociolotron is rigorously policed and not available for underage players.

EDITORIAL - Best PC Titles of E3 2000
| 01/01/00 | GF! Back Catalogue 10/2004 => 1995
After digging ourselves out from under the digital press kits and betas, here are what we think will the top dozen games of 2000. But first, a few caveats: we chose not to include any of the games that we chose as best of show for last year--that means that some excellent games--like Shogun, Diablo II, Deus Ex, Giants, and Oni-- will not be listed below. And we also decided not to include a few most excellent games that will be released in the very near future--including Sierra\'s Ground Control and Activisions\' Vampire: The Masquerade and Dark Reign 2.
