First Impressions: Too Human
game: Too Human
preview | 07/18/08 | Chris Martin
This terribly cold, strenuous year has entered it\'s warming period. Twentysomethings venture to the park for volleyball or soccer. Some throw frisbees or discs, if you prefer the neutral term. Also, the demo for Too Human has hit Live Marketplace. We suggest you go download it and play it. It\'s a game with as much controversy as variety, as little tact as subtlety.

EA Announces Godfather Release Date
game: The Godfather
news | 01/30/06 | Shawn Rider
Electronic Arts has confirmed North American and European release dates for The Godfather, the game based on Francis Ford Coppola\'s 1972 mafia movie classic. Dogged by controversy, The Godfather is almost guaranteed to really P-O a bunch of gamers at least as much as it satisfies a bunch of others. We can\'t wait to check it out for ourselves. PC, Xbox and PS2 owners will get a shot at the virtual mob lifestyle in March. EA also has Xbox 360 and PSP versions in development, but those won\'t be out until later this year. Get some new screens and more info here.

Booth Babes: An Ongoing Controversy
feature | 01/26/06 | Shawn Rider
The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced yesterday that they would enforce a $5000 fine on any company who violates a more modest \"booth babes\" policy at their Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), to be held May 10-12, 2006 in Los Angeles. E3 has long been known in part for the models companies hire to attract attendees to their booths. Some companies hire people dressed like main characters, others just hire a few pretty ladies with fancy underwear.

Coverage of this story inspired us to re-post a GamesFirst! classic. Back in 2001 we did a short documentary at E3 delving into the question of Booth Babes. We\'ve re-encoded it for iPod support (should work for all PC platforms, too), and we\'re re-releasing the video today. Check it out.

Video Game Politics for the Informed
news | 09/29/05 | Aaron Stanton
Sometimes the best source of news is a blog, and when a good one shows up we\'re obligated to point it out. If you\'ve never heard of the Game Politics blog on LiveJournal, take note, because it\'s a website that should be a part of every serious gamer\'s morning ritual. The website focuses on news that pertains to video games in the political arena, like anti-game rallies, anti-game legislation, and anti-game personalities. At the moment the site is discussing, among other things, Eidos\'s decision to postpone the release of the hotly debated 25-to-Life until 2006. The \"cop-killer simulation\" has been a center for controversy in the mainstream media. If keeping yourself informed about the industry is important, this is a site you\'ll want to check regularly.

news | 08/19/05 | Shawn Rider
Stephen Johnson, author of Everything Bad Is Good For You: How Today\'s Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter (Riverhead Books), wrote a wonderful open letter to Hillary Clinton in the LA Times regarding the recent flare-up of the old \"videogames are evil\" controversy. He brings up just about all of the relevant counterpoints to this month\'s mass hysteria and political jockeying. It\'s really a must-read.

game: BMX XXX
news | 10/17/02 | Shawn Rider
Acclaim has responded to the recent controversy surrounding the release of BMX XXX, their latest extreme sports game targeted to a mature audience. The company makes some good points about unfairly characterizing videogames as exclusively kids\' stuff. Also noteworthy in their statement is the lack of any mention of toning down the PS2 version, as was previously rumored. Click here.
