Video Game Theory: The Videogame to Movie Craze: A trend that has to end?
Articles Archive | 03/05/05 | Chris Martin
Using many of the same storytelling conventions as the movie industry, it's not surprising that game plots have been turning up on film pretty consistently these days; few, as of yet, are really any good. What makes it so hard to turn a good game into a good movie? Is one medium really incompatible with the other? Chris doesn't think so, and he explains his views in this excellent and informed perspective of game-to-movie adaptations. If you don't want to lose faith in the movie industry's ability to make competent movies out of what should be excellent source material, this is an article you need to read before catching films like Alone in the Dark.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
game: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
review | 02/24/05 |
Knights of the Old Republic II finds itself in the difficult position of trying to improve on one of the best games in recent years. The result is a game built on tried and true game dynamics, a darker emphasis than the original, and a new story that takes you from Star Wars planet to Star Wars planet, but doesn't break ground and drops you at the end. A blast to play, but missing a little bit of that special magic that was captured in the first, KotoRII might not rock your world. David has the inside scoop.

Second Sight
game: Second Sight
review | 02/23/05 | Chris Martin
It seems like a fundamental rule of thumb in video games: coma = amnesia and psychic powers. Few games execute the mystery and atmosphere of such creepy going-ons, though, as well as Free Radical's budget title Second Sight. It's atmospheric and story driven, and worth your money if you're looking for a game that will keep your interest. Read the full review to find out the details.

MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf
game: MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf
review | 02/14/05 | Sarah Wichlacz
MechAssault was one of the standout titles on Xbox Live when it first launched. It paved the way for reliable online multiplayer and loads of content downloads. MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf amps up the multiplayer game and beefs up the single player story mode to boot. It's a great thing.

Deus Ex was one of the great intellectual shooters. It allowed a level of freedom in gameplay that has never been matched in the FPS genre, even by its own sequels. But where, oh where has Deus Ex gone? Well in this case, it started over. Project: Snowblind, once built to be Deus Ex: Clan Wars, launches into a new world that offers that same style freedom of choice with a directed story that keeps you from being lost or bored. Take a look at this upcoming release, packed full of enemies, explosions, and intrigue.

Advent Rising, Storytelling, and Free Speech in Video Games
Articles Archive | 01/17/05 | Aaron Stanton
How important can great storytelling in a game be? Characters we care about? Plots we actually want to know the ending to? Sounds like a book or something. Take a moment to find out why Aaron connects Advent Rising with art in video games, free speech, and apparently an issue he has with remembering things.

review | 01/10/05 | George Holomshek
If you're looking for a great storyline, good gameplay, and the ability to suck hours of your time away, Enemy Technology's I of the Enemy might just be the ticket. While a bit weak in eye candy, this budget title offers the key elements of a good game at a reasonable price. Make sure you check out the review, then the game.

Half-Life 2
game: Half-Life 2

It's been five years since the original Half-life wowed the world with its brilliantly executed in-game scripting and storytelling; quite a wait for those of us holding our breaths for a full-blown sequel. Now we have it, possibly one of the most beautiful games ever, and with a crowbar that can actually break open barrels this time around. Can it possibly be as good as the original? Find out.

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
game: Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
review | 12/26/04 | Jeremy Kauffman
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War brings us the same great action we've come to expect from the franchise. If blowing things up in a jet and really gorgeous visuals are for you, but you can't be bothered with the details of true flight sims, then the Ace Combat games are ideal. Unsung War is no different: Great graphics and tight, easy controls, mixed with a few new feature and a totally laughable storyline mark this as a game for the more arcade-oriented flight enthusiast.

Midway Arcade Treasures 2
game: Midway Arcade Treasures 2
review | 11/30/04 | Chris Martin
Some people have greater claim to history than others. Britney Spears, who's been a pop icon for somewhere around five years, has a harder time legitimately releasing a Greatest Hits album than say, The Rolling Stones, or The Beatles. But in the videogame industry, few companies can claim history like Midway, and they've put together another collection of classics to let us gamers relive the old-school. How have these forerunners held up over the years? Make sure you read our review to find out if this collection should make it into a loved one's gift pile? or onto your wish list.

Video Game Invasion: The History of a Global Obsession
game: Video Game Invasion: The History of a Global Obsession
review | 11/23/04 | Shawn Rider
There's nothing to give you that feeling of being one of the gang,? here at GamesFirst than being able to pull out obscure videogame trivia during conversations. While some might consider jokes about Pong, Zelda, and the need for Princess Peach to take self-defense lessons as an indication that we're nerds, around here we consider it the height of sophistication. How do we keep on top of the game? Well, we read, we subscribe to our own newsletter, and we keep an eye open for the occasional quality DVD documentary like Video Game Invasion. It's an inside look with the right sources and the right heart. Make sure you read our review.

preview | 07/10/04 | GF! Back Catalogue 10/2004 => 1995
The wizards at Bioware that brought us Knights of the Old Republic are at it again. Jade Empire is an action RPG set in mythological China, and so far it seems like it has all the right stuff. Like KOTR, Jade Empire looks to offer a strong, story driven RPG experience and a hearty dose of action. Our guy Eric Bodrero got his hands on it at E3 and has good things to say about it.
