game: Gears of War
news | 10/05/05 | Shawn Rider
Gears of War is the new shooter from Cliffy B and the crew at Epic that\'s got everyone going, \"Damn!\" The visuals here are absolutely incredible, from the dirty textures of a wartorn humanity pitted against monstrous enemies from the bowels of the Earth, to the delicate lighting effects that challenge the greatest cinematographers and most sensitive painterly visions. We can only hope that the gameplay and story live up to the huge graphical promise of Unreal Engine 3. Check out these screens for a real idea of what the Xbox 360 can do.

Kameo Screens From X05
game: Kameo: Elements of Power
news | 10/05/05 | Shawn Rider
Rare\'s long-in-development Kameo: Elements of Power has made gamers oddly curious for over half a decade now. We\'re curious about the great graphics, lush game world, Xbox Live multiplayer, and, of course, Rare\'s reputation for delivering great titles. But it\'s odd because the game has been in development since it first debuted on N64, then moved to GameCube, and finally will land on Xbox 360 this Fall. Historically, such business shenanigans are not good for a game. We\'ll find out this Fall when we finally get our hands on Kameo: Elements of Power. In the meantime, here are some new screens.

In an announcement sure to get gamers everywhere all worked up, Microsoft announced at the X05 Amsterdam expo that Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh (creators of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy and the upcoming King Kong) will be Executive Producers on the upcoming Halo movie. The news also means that Academy Award winning New Zealand effects house, Weta Digital, will also be involved in the movie, which is another great sign. It looks like Halo might just set the bar a little higher for the old game-to-film adaptation, just as it did for the console-based FPS and again for console-based online multiplayer.

Cyan Worlds Confirms They're Back
news | 10/03/05 | Aaron Stanton
Cyan Worlds, makers of Myst, laid off their entire development crew earlier this month and shut their doors for what the gaming industry assumed was forever. Turns out that\'s not the case. Ryan Miller, co-founder of Cyan Worlds, has confirmed to GamesFirst that the company has rehired some portion of their development team. \"Yes, we have rehired most everyone,\" he said. \"At this point, I can\'t really say more.\" Earlier, MercuryNews.com received similar confirmation from Cyan Worlds. Screens from N3: Ninety-Nine Nights
game: N3: Nintety-Nine Nights
news | 09/30/05 | Shawn Rider
Tetsuya Mizuguchi is most well-known for his rhythm-based experimental games Rez and Lumines. Both of these games have been major cult hits, and Mizuguchi continues to explore these areas. But in his new title for Xbox 360, N3: Ninety-Nine Nights, Mizuguchi puts you in control of a badass fighter slaughtering oceans of enemies. Video Game Politics for the Informed
news | 09/29/05 | Aaron Stanton
Sometimes the best source of news is a blog, and when a good one shows up we\'re obligated to point it out. If you\'ve never heard of the Game Politics blog on LiveJournal, take note, because it\'s a website that should be a part of every serious gamer\'s morning ritual. The website focuses on news that pertains to video games in the political arena, like anti-game rallies, anti-game legislation, and anti-game personalities. At the moment the site is discussing, among other things, Eidos\'s decision to postpone the release of the hotly debated 25-to-Life until 2006. The \"cop-killer simulation\" has been a center for controversy in the mainstream media. If keeping yourself informed about the industry is important, this is a site you\'ll want to check regularly.

game: Burnout: Revenge
review | 09/29/05 | Tristan Mayshark
Electronic Arts\' latest update to the Burnout series, Burnout: Revenge puts the focus squarely on action and destruction. With many more routes open on each track, and some significant shifting of gameplay elements, this is a sequel that will either be very well-liked, or, if you\'re like our man Tristan, will have you returning to Burnout 3 to try to regain that je ne sais quoi of creating streets full of vehicular carnage.
