Kuma Reality Games Hits CNN, Pisses People Off
game: Kuma\War
news | 10/25/05 | Aaron Stanton
Kuma Reality Games, makers of Kuma\\War, found themselves the center of international attention when a petition began circulating requesting the removal of one of their products from the web. The petition, written in Farsi, demands that a mission portraying an American attack on Iran be removed from the website and made unavailable for download. In the body of the petition, the author expresses a concern that the game is designed to measure world sensitivity to a U.S. assault on Iran. \"In my opinion,\" the petition reads, \"this is not something we can easily ignore.\" The petition, and the reaction from the Iranian press in regards to the game, has made it into the top headlines on CNN.com.

Maker of DS Trojan Apologizes
game: Nintendo DS
news | 10/17/05 | Aaron Stanton
The creator of Trojan.DSBrick.A and B, Trojans that disable the Nintendo DS when installed, has issued a public apology. The Brick Trojan seeks out and deletes key system files from Nintendo\'s handheld, rendering it near worthless, or Bricked. Average DS owners have nothing to fear, since the Trojan can\'t spread without the active involvement of the user, but fellow members of the homebrew community have been in an uproar over the issue. DarkFader posted a public apology, along with instructions on how to repair a DS destroyed by the Trojan (to the best of our ability) on his website.

Cyan Worlds Confirms They're Back
news | 10/03/05 | Aaron Stanton
Cyan Worlds, makers of Myst, laid off their entire development crew earlier this month and shut their doors for what the gaming industry assumed was forever. Turns out that\'s not the case. Ryan Miller, co-founder of Cyan Worlds, has confirmed to GamesFirst that the company has rehired some portion of their development team. \"Yes, we have rehired most everyone,\" he said. \"At this point, I can\'t really say more.\" Earlier, MercuryNews.com received similar confirmation from Cyan Worlds. Is it possible the game industry has not really lost one of its original pioneers? Sounds like it.

Bethesda Releases Screenshots of Oblivion's Level Editor
game: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
news | 09/12/05 | Aaron Stanton
While some of us can\'t wait to get our hands on the official release of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, others can\'t wait to get their hands on the map and quest maker. The PC version of the title will ship with a level editor that allows fans of the series to create their own stories and levels independent of the original storyline, just as Elder Scrolls III did. Bethesda and 2K Games have released screenshots of the upcoming editor, and the shots should be of interest to gamers with a creative streak and a desire to make worlds instead of just play in them.

Modding Community Gets Head Start on Xbox 360
news | 08/31/05 | Aaron Stanton
Probably the people most passionate about whether or not the Xbox 360 has a hard drive are system modders, who can possibly use the hard drive for everything from stealing games (bad) to running homebrew software (goodish). Now, the makers of the SmartXX mod chip for the Xbox have gotten hold of a number of Xbox 360 development kits. They\'ve opened the system and photographed the insides, which is a pretty good indication that the modding community is already at work on modding the next generation game consoles.

Everquest II
game: Everquest II
review | 12/14/04 | Eric Bodrero
With quality competition from games like City of Heroes and World of Warcraft, all arriving in the last year to vie for our monthly subscription dollars, the makers of EverQuest have a much tougher battlefield before them than they did five years ago when the series first helped define the genre. How good of an experience does EverQuest II offer? Is it worth your time in a world awash with MMOGs? Make sure you read Eric's review to find out.

Fighter Maker 2
game: Fighter Maker 2
review | 12/22/02 | Eric Qualls
Agetec brings us the next-gen installment of their very creative franchise in Fighter Maker 2. The graphics are better and there are more options than ever for making your own fighters and then duking it out in the ring. Unfortunately, tedious creation menus and a clunky core fighting engine hinder this one. Click here.

Articles Archive | 07/01/00 | GF! Back Catalogue 10/2004 => 1995
Just this week the IDSA (Interactive Digital Software Association, the trade organization for video game makers and the like) announced a lawsuit naming six individuals who have been copying and distributing, for a profit, all kinds of games. What's even more astonishing is that one of these folks is from Idaho, the great home state of GF! We just don't get much publicity for Idaho, and I felt like the connection beckoned me to write this article.

Infogrames created a buzz when they acquired Hasbro Interactive this past year, and at E3 the company showed off some of the new franchises they plan on developing. Perhaps the most exciting prospect is the return of Atari, a very hushed buzz floating around the Infogrames booth. Atari, venerable videogame maker and the company responsible for such classic games as Galaga, made a splash at this year's E3 with their latest title: Water Bottle.
