Retailers Brace for the PS3
news | 06/11/06 | Matt James
The PlayStation 2 launch was legendary for beginning the \"shortages\" craze. After last year\'s Xbox 360 launch, all gamers should now realize that if they want a new console system on launch day, it will be a fight. Nintendo looks to be shipping enough systems to satisfy demand, but this year we\'re concerned again about Sony. With some retailers refusing to take PlayStation 3 preorders, a confusing multi-configuration release offering, and a spotted history of delays and adjustments, PS3 is headed for a rocky launch. We have some details about what to expect on launch day here.

Sony's Phil Harrison Slams PCs, Talks Tilting, Defends Blu-Ray
news | 06/03/06 | Chris Martin
With the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, and the Wii on the market come November, how will Sony cope? Are they looking for an answer to Microsoft\'s Live Anywhere service, which will link Xbox 360 owners, PC owners, and mobile owners in a new and fresh way? Are they looking to clean up with their Blu-Ray high definition disc player? Or will their new tilt/sensor Dual un-Shock controller be able to propell Sony beyond Nintendo\'s Wii? Truly, there is a lot ahead of Sony. President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Phil Harrison has a lot to say about the PS3, Live Anywhere, and the Wii remote. And of course, he doesn\'t mind ripping the PC a new one while he\'s at it. Tough as nails, if there\'s only one thing you had to say about Phil its \"he\'s got balls.\" Read on to find out why.

The PS3 Afterthought: Hands on with Warhawk
game: Warhawk
preview | 05/20/06 | Jeremy Kauffman
Overall, Sony\'s PlayStation 3 area was pathetic (and less crowded than we\'ve ever seen at the Sony booth since 1999). Other than anti-aliasing issues, wonky early builds, and (at best) 360-quality graphics, there wasn\'t much to talk about. Except one thing: Sony did surprise everyone by announcing a me-too technology that adds tilt-sensitivity to the PS3 controller. How did that work out? Well, Jeremy took some time with the showcase title for the new tilt-controls, Warhawk, a flight combat game that shows how any new control element, no matter how small, can make a moderate game kind of sort of fun. Get the full details here.

Sonic The Hedgehog Preview
game: Sonic The Hedgehog
preview | 05/19/06 | RJ Brooks
Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Sonic contained the same features and levels. The difference between the games is where one would expect it to be-the graphics. However, the version with the best graphics is not the \"powerhouse\" PlayStation 3. Our man, Rob, runs down how the first next-gen Sonic title is coming along, and finds one of the most grievous examples of PS3 comparing unfavorably with the Xbox 360.

PS3 Delayed, Scheduled for November 2006, Hard Disc Drive Confirmed
news | 03/15/06 | Chris Martin
Rumors have more or less stated that the PlayStation 3 won\'t make its Spring launch, and now it\'s official. The PS3 is coming in November. November of 2006 will have the PS3 hitting store shelves a full year behind the Xbox 360, which launched in late November of 2005. Without specific word on when Nintendo plans on releasing their Revolution, it\'s hard to say whether or not this will make the PS3 the last console of this generation to reach the market. We\'re all excited about Sony\'s announcement, though, read the full article to find out why...

Sony Admits Potential PS3 Delay
game: Playstation 3
news | 02/27/06 | Aaron Stanton
Heading into the Spring season, rumblings are growing that Sony won\'t be able to hit their announced PS3 release date of \"Spring 2006.\" Next-Gen.biz is reporting that delays in finalizing the Blu-Ray drive could force Sony to push back the PS3\'s release. GameSpot is also reporting that potential supply problems could make it difficult for Sony to mass produce the drive. Both articles quote similar sources, both claim that Sony has acknowledged the potential for delays. It\'s our suspicion that both reports are based on the same data, subject to varying types of interpretation, but either way you read it makes you wonder about the accuracy Sony\'s original release window.

The latest installment in his six-part retrospective on legendary 2D action game developer Treasure is Robert\'s review of the 1996 cult classic, Guardian Heroes. Find out why some gamers still maintain Saturn systems to play this game in its native format.

Playstation Live Coming After All?
game: Playstation 3
news | 02/03/06 | Aaron Stanton
Contrary to comments made by Sony Vice President Phil Harrison in November of 2005, Playstation Magazine is reporting that Sony Entertainment is busy at work creating an online service designed to rival Xbox Live. This is good news for Sony fans that were concerned the PS3 might carry over the PS2\'s continuing online strategy... which means none. Sony has repeatedly committed itself to taking the PS3 online, but has released little information about how they plan on doing that. Assuming Phil Harrison wasn\'t lying in November, we can only assume that the Playstation\'s online system will still be mostly up to developers, not Sony itself. Sony, of course, won\'t comment on rumors.

game: Final Fantasy XI
preview | 01/25/06 | Matt James

Not only is Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi bringing a series of exclusive games to Xbox 360 with his new company, but Final Fantasy XI will arrive on the platform, too. The latest copy of Xbox Magazine features a Final Fantasy XI beta test disc for Xbox 360 owners. If you\'re a fan of FF, then you\'ll want to check this out. feature | 12/25/05 | Aaron Stanton
As the first days of the 4th Asia Game Show and Digital Entertainment Expo Asia 2005 get underway, it\'s interesting to see the differences between this Hong Kong exposition and what we normally see at E3. Designed much more to be a one day event than a multi-day outing for the average attendee, there\'s still enough to keep even the most casual technophiles interested. From cell phones to TV\'s, Editor Aaron Stanton describes the expo after the first two days, including what he saw behind that intriguing PlayStation 3 sign he spotted going up before the show opened.
