Student Declared Witch and Burned for Making In-Game Map of High School.

When a student at Clements High School in Texas made a video game mod based on the layout of his local high school, he probably didn\'t expect the reaction it eventually received. Two months after the map was created, the Virginia Tech shootings happened, and authorities took the students map as a threat. Not only was he removed from the campus grounds and sent to an alternative school, he\'s been bared from participating in graduation. Yet no one seems to believe that he actually represented a threat to the community - in that no one seems convinced he was on the verge of picking up a gun and shooting someone. The only problem is that he did something that - some people, at least - connect to events like Virginia Tech. In other words, it didn\'t matter that he wasn\'t really a witch, merely that he looked enough like one to be punished.

Xbox 360 Sees Its First Unofficial NES Emulator

Microsoft\'s courtship of the homebrew game developer has led to the Xbox 360 running its first unofficial NES emulator. While not useful to the general public, a programmer by the name of Lone Coder used Microsoft\'s XNA Game Studio Express to convert an existing emulator - SharpNES - to run on XNA environments. That includes both PCs running Windows Vista and the Xbox 360. The development introduces the Xbox 360 to its first taste of unapproved retro-gaming, and while limitations built into Game Studio Express prevent a usable release on the 360, it\'s nice to see Microsoft take steps to embrace the homebrew community instead of alienating them.

Do you like shooting bad guys in the face with a variety of weapons? Then you\'re probably already familiar with F.E.A.R., last year\'s instant classic FPS from Monolith. We strapped our resident cheeky strategy freak Sean to a desk and made him play the new expansion pack to F.E.A.R., Extraction Point, until he swore Shawn was Alma and the rest of the GF! staff were clone troops. And that\'s one game that\'s sure to end badly. As part of his community service, we\'re making him write the review anyways. Enjoy!

Xbox 360 Gains Big Glowing Eye

The Xbox Live Vision Camera is a great thing in most ways, but we wish there were more to do with it at the moment. Having just launched, not a lot of folks have dropped the 40 beans necessary to add a (slightly creepy) glowing eye to your Xbox 360s already too powerful and communicative brain. But the potential is undeniable: A solid camera and incredibly easy installation and configuration bode well for this device, which may also hold Microsoft\'s key to providing Wii-like game interaction without a controller. Lionhead Studios addressed the lack of special effects in last year\'s The Movies by releasing an expansion pack, The Movies: Stunts and Effects. Installing the new expansion changes very little in the simulation until you\'ve played through the 1960s, but opens up a wide range of options for the machinima community. Budding directors can now control a freely movable camera and place stuntmen into precariously dangerous situations. Stunts and Effects is aimed at gamers who are already invested in The Movies and want to make it better; for everyone else it\'s just a worthy addition that adds yet another group of needy staffers for the player to manage. Systems like the original Xbox and Sony\'s PSP are praiseworthy on their own, but they can be made even better through the creative application of homebrew software. Enthusiast developed software has helped shape the console industry since the days of the Sega Saturn and the original PlayStation.
